Local Attractions and Activities

Many of our guests just want to unwind, relax and watch the constantly changing sea, but if you’re keen there are plenty of other attractions and activities nearby.

On a clear night the sky is spectacular, and is something quite different from what can be seen in the city!

Seal South of The Folly

There is a local seal colony at the headland, about 5 minutes walk away. The fishing is also superb and the Tora area is renowned for both paua and crayfish. There is a boat launching spot about 2km north of The Folly.

For those interested in geology, the local land structures will be of interest. There is a geological map and a book about Wairarapa geology at The Folly, which will provide plenty of ideas for exploration.

In particular, the limestone in the area has provided some interesting caving opportunities. Perhaps the most accessible is at Ruakokopatuna where there is an easy walk through glow worm caves. Take the turn-off to Ruakokopatuna between Martinborough and the Hau Nui wind farm. It is well signposted. You’ll need shorts, a torch and footwear that you can wear in water.

You will pass the Hau Nui wind farm about 20km from Martinborough on the road to The Folly.

For those really wanting to stretch their legs, the Tora Walk
provides a three-day excursion to explore the South Wairarapa area.

About 4km south of The Folly, you will find the hull of a shipwreck (1926) which is best seen at low tide, or try golf cross at Station Bush near Martinborough.

Surfers should visit one of the region’s best surf spots at White Rock. It is widely acclaimed as a “monster” wave location. To get to White Rock, take the road back up to the fork at Tuturumuri, and then follow White Rock Road back down to the coast.
